Did you know that Hedy Lamarr the Hollywood Actress and Icon invented Wifi, Bluetooth and GPS Technology?
Neither did I, and if you already knew – good for you! π
When I heard about this documentary film, and heard it was an actress from Hollywood that had invented Wifi technology, I googled her name, as I wanted to see what she looked like – and then, just like many before me (I can guarantee) I was astounded by her absolute beauty <3 and couldn’t believe that this lady was also an inventor of such amazing technological advances – then I immediately felt guilty for judging a book by it’s cover
Hedy apparently said on many occasions that her beauty was a ‘curse’, that nobody ever saw past her face.
…there I was, doing the exact same thing – how awful π
Why is it so hard to believe that women can have both beauty and brains? Is it social conditioning? Little girls are encouraged to be pretty and little boys encouraged to be clever?
Is it OK for girls who are less attractive? I wonder how many people still think like this in 2018?
Take a look at the trailer…
Synopsis
Born, Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in 1914, this film by Alexandra Dean and produced by Susan Sarandon documents Hedy’s life from her emigration from Austria to the United States, we gain insight into her personal and professional life, the highs and lows and her fight to be recognised for her real self.
We learn how she and her composer beau, George Antheil,Β developed a radio guidance system for Allied Torpedoes at the beginning of World War 2, using frequency hopping technology.
This is the foundation of which wireless communication uses today.
My Thoughts
I am so glad I got to learn about Hedy Lamarr and her fantastic achievements, I really do respect her and i’m sure many woman have experienced being dismissed at some point due to their gender, but it’s probably ten times more frustrating when you have a gorgeous face and a public image that screams more “Sex Goddess” than “Inventor”.
Poor Hedy, I did really feel for her during the struggles.
The film also highlights the conditions of a Hollywood contract, which I found pretty interesting, the work was gruelling with long hours, with not much say on when, how or what movies you were starring in, it all seemed to be led by the big bosses of whom you were merely their property!
Isn’t it funny how you can’t really tell how things are behind the scenes, I suppose, it’s just the same that you can’t really judge a book by it’s cover – People can surprise you – in a nice way π
It was a great reminder for me to be less judgemental and let people show me who they are rather than give into my preconceptions of who I believe them to be.
A thought provoking film and a great account of a wonderful woman.
Go see it!
