OK, I’m going to be honest, when I was invited to attend a special screening of this film, I was very reluctant to go, as I am not a ‘horror film’ fan – I’m too much of a baby and the trailer for this film almost had me trembling with fear. I could envision myself in the future – I’ll too scared to sleep, too scared to turn the lights off, probably jump for days at any unexpected sound – then I thought ‘Pull yourself together, girl and get over your fear!’ , so I did the next best thing & asked my horror-loving younger sister, Tamara to attend with me – at least I’d have someone to hold onto on the scary bits.
Here’s the trailer that got me in a tizzy 😀 ….
Do you see why I was terrified? 😀
This is why I needed my lil sis 😉
The Synopsis
After the loss of her Father, teenager Leah, (Nicole Munoz) is forced by her grief-stricken mother (Laurie Holden) to move far away to a house in the woods.
Like most teenagers, Leah is not happy about the move as she doesn’t want to leave her friends, her school and a certain boy behind, but her mother can no longer stay in the house where there are so many memories of her husband and believes a fresh start is what she needs to move on.
An angry Leah, who has a fascination with the occult, decides to perform ritual to have her mother killed but this awakens something in the woods that she cannot control.
Leah changes her mind and wants to stop the “Pyewacket” but how? Is it too late?
My Thoughts
Like I said previously, I am not a huge horror fan, but I din’t find this film as scary as I thought it was going to be – Phew!
Don’t get me wrong, it’s all edge of your seat stuff, and I was (and most of the other viewers) physically on the edge of our cinema seats… waiting… forgetting to breathe as our eyes were glued to see what would happen next.
The film covered many themes, including grief, first love, friendships and mother/daughter relationships.
Personally, I didn’t particularly like Leah’s character, but did feel for her when she was trying to fix everything. I thought Nicole Munoz played an angry, teen very well, great actress. I hope to see her in more films in the future.
I have to admit I thought Laurie Holden was amazing as Leah’s mother, Mrs Reyes, she is a fantastic actress who probably displayed every emotion possible in this film, another amazing actress who played her part perfectly.
This film was made by the same team who made the films, The Void and The Witch, (both films I have not yet seen, but will do now that i’m not such a baby) 😀
If you want edge of your seat stuff – I suggest you grab a copy of the DVD, a brave relative or friend (optional) and buckle in for the ride!
Enjoy!
