“This film is an absolute classic, so PLEASE don’t ruin it!”
That was my response when I heard that the film was being re-made for a new generation, I’m sure this was also the response of many ‘Chucky’ fans worldwide.
I am pleased to say that it has been done very nicely indeed – updated but with keeping with the ‘feel’ of the original.
On first glance, Andy (Gabriel Bateman), seemed a little too old to ‘play’ with dolls, but when you realise how much advanced tech is in these ‘Buddi’ dolls you realise that it’s not really a doll at all, really more like a robot or a walking & talking computer who can control other devices around the home, such as the TV etc…
Andy’s mum, Karen (Aubrey Plaza) gets his from work after a disgruntled customer complains that it doesn’t work properly and demands a refund i order to purchase the new upgraded model in 2 weeks.
Feeling the pressure of not being able to afford a decent present for Andy’s upcoming birthday, Karen takes the doll hom, but as you probably already know, this ‘Buddi’ is no ordinary doll.
Take a look at the trailer….
The Story
Same concept – crazy psycho murdering doll, but the lead up to it is a new and updated story.
I’m one of those people who always want the re-make to be exactly like the original, but of course, if that were the case, what would be the point?
Obviously when it’s a bad remake, we all prefer that they didn’t mess with such a classic film, but I can honestly say that the new story is a good story with loveable new characters.
Andy and his mum are new to the area, mum has a new boyfriend that Andy doesn’t approve of, so the Mother – Son relationship is a bit strained.
After receiving the Buddi Doll, Andy finds he can confide in his cool new toy, that he names “Chuckie”.
This doll seems to be able to do additional things not on the instruction manual, but it impresses the local kids, with whom he makes friends and then the real action starts to unravel from there…
My Thoughts
A great re-make for a new generation of ‘Chuckie’ fans, I thought the pacing of the film was just perfect.
It had some real hilarious moments as well as edge of your seat thrills too!
Absolutely loved it!
Get out and see it if you haven’t already.
Thanks for reading!
