Welcome to the final stop on the ‘Million Love Songs’ Book Blog tour! If you haven’t already read the reviews of the other lovely bloggers on the tour, make sure to check out their thoughts too.
When I kindly sent a copy of this book about a month ago, I sighed – you know that sigh, when you’d love to do something, but you have other commitments that will make it almost impossible.
Without reading the synopsis on the back of the book, I knew that I would love to review it, (it’s a Carole Matthew’s Book after all), but my work schedule was pretty hectic and I know that I am not one of the world’s fastest readers.
And then….I read the synopsis….
Ruby Brown is ready for a change.
She’s single for the first time in years and she’s going to dive into this brave new world with a smile on her face and a spring in her step. The last thing she’s looking for is a serious relationship.Mason represents everything Ruby wants right now: he’s charming, smooth and perfect for some no-strings-attached fun. Joe on the other hand is kind and attractive, but comes with the sort of baggage Ruby wants to avoid: an annoyingly attractive ex-wife and two teenage children.
Ruby thinks she knows what she wants, but is it what she needs to be truly happy? It’s about to get emotional in Million Love Songs.
It’s just so my type of book, I’m a sucker for a story about a strong woman getting her life in order, (a tale I feel I can relate to, lol) then I was invited to participate in the blog tour – I couldn’t resist – so, with a bit of rearranging and a strict schedule I vowed to use every spare moment to read this book, which after a few pages in, wasn’t so difficult, it was trying to STOP reading it to get other work done – that was the problem 😀
My Thoughts
Warning: Be prepared to laugh out loud, so be careful if you read this book in public 😉
The story starts as Ruby has made a start to her new life, she has a new job, new flat in a new area and is adjusting to her new single life. There are some funny moments that one encounters living alone, without a man, that I totally related to.
Ruby‘s new job as a waitress is not too demanding, which gives her plenty of time to focus on other areas of her life, such as taking up a hobby, spending time with friends and her love life, of course.
To be honest, I found Ruby quite frustrating at times, it seemed like she didn’t know who or what she wanted, so fickle and indecisive, but although I didn’t agree with every decision that she made at first, sometimes I would think, “Actually, yes, Ruby, why not? You do your thing girl!”
The book is written in the first person and Ruby‘s character is trying her best to navigate this modern world of dating with all it’s highs and lows that i’m sure most single women can relate to.
I loved her friendship with Charlie, she seems from a different world to Ruby, but their friendship really works, she provides the voice of reason at times, but I was glad to see that Ruby also had a mind of her own.
The main themes in this book are relationships, love, friendship and trust but other themes such as domestic violence and abuse are touched upon too.
The pop group Take That and Gary Barlow himself have quite a role in this story too and provide some much needed light relief for both the plot as well as Ruby.
If you want a quick read, that will keep you turning the pages with desperation to find out what happens next, with a not too predictable plot, then this is a book to grab now.
It made me laugh so many times and when I reached the last third of the book I seriously could not stop reading until my eyes gave up, it was SO good – so much was happening and I really wanted to know how it was going to end – then I slowed down slightly as I didn’t want it to end (have you ever been caught up in a book like that, or is it just me?)
Another gem from Carole Matthews – I definitely recommend. 🙂
Carole Matthews created a special Spotify Playlist to accompany the book – So in the true spirit of ‘Million Love Songs’ I have also created a playlist of a few of my favourite love songs too.
