There are 2 things you need to know before reading this review;
- This is not your typical Zombie film
- It’s not an American Movie, it’s a Koreon Movie
When I first heard about this film, I headed straight to YouTube to see if I could find a trailer, as I love a good Zombie movie, whilst watching the trailer I had already calling my friend Jasmine to make her watch it too, I was thinking… “I have GOT to see this!” Luckily, I was able to attend a preview screening.
Take a look at the trailer for yourself…
Those who know me, know that I’m not into Horror films so much, but I have been getting into Zombie films lately, the beauty of this film is that it has so many other elements going on rather than just being your typical Zombie “blood-fest“.
The film starts with establishing the relationships between the protagonist Seouk Woo (played by Yoo Gong) and his Mother, Daughter and Ex-wife.
Soo-an (played by Soo-An Kim), is desperate to spend her birthday with her Mother in Busan and begs her reluctant father, Seouk Woo to take her, he agrees but will take her early via the train, so to be back to work by lunchtime.
We see passengers fill the train and settle for the journey alongside a a teenage baseball team and acouple of suspicious looking characters.
TV news reports that there are violent protests and fighting going on in the town and most the passengers turn to their phones checking reports via friends, family and social media.
The violence seems to be spreading across the town to other towns, then there is a commotion in one of the carriages – panic ensues, people are screaming, running, fighting for their lives through the train.
The problem is Soo-Ann is not with her father, she went to the toilet while he dozed off and now is trapped and cannot make her way back to him – nor him to her, well, not without going through carriages of Zombies first 🙁
Will they reunite? If so, for how long? Will they both survive? No Spoilers here…you’ll have to watch for yourself.
MY THOUGHTS
This film has lots of amazing moments, my particular favourites is the humour in the dialogue between a fellow passenger Dong-Seok (played by Sang Hwa) alongside his pregnant wife and Seok Woo, it’s such light relief amidst the panic and drama of the situation, the issues of class and selfish survival (looking out for number one) are brought up and provide much food for thought.
It’s a non-stop action packed film which, once it gets going, doesn’t pause for breathe at all!
Minute by minute, I was either holding my breath the sighing with relief, laughing, crying and found myself at the edge of my seat at one point, it’s a hard movie to watch sitting still and quiet – you get caught up in all the emotional drama of the characters, like the 2 elderly sisters, or the arrogant selfish train guard who actually makes the main character seem like a lovely guy.
Yes, that’s something I’ve not touched on yet, Seok Woo, I did not like him, he’s not a nice person, he’s selfish, neglects his daughter as he’s too busy with work and doesn’t really make an effort to get to know her, when the crisis starts you see how selfish he is, but then…there is a transformation, like he actually learns how to be a nicer person, a better dad, he actually becomes likeable…if not loveable during this film – it doesn’t hurt that he’s totally easy on the eyes <3 😀
Many times during the film I thought ‘this is it, it’s over for them now’ but it showed how strong the human spirit is and how hard we can fight for survival.
The little star of this film has got to be Soo-Ann, she’s such a good actress with great facial expressions.
Her heartbreaking performance near the end of the film is so touching, I don’t think there was a dry eye in the place!
I highly recommend this film if you love Zombies + Action + a dash of Human Spirit.
Train To Busan opens in cinemas on Friday 28th October 2016 in the UK – Certificate: 15
