I expected this film to be a typical sex education documentary film, stating the statistics that we’ve probably all heard before, such as the dismal state of sex education in schools, the high rate of teenage pregnancy in the western world and the limited knowledge of most adults regarding the correct names of the parts of our most intimate bits….but…HOLD ON… this is SO different,it’s funny, engaging and Alex Liu is so open and honest from the beginning about his own experience and sexuality.
Take a look at the trailer…
My Thoughts
Firstly, I must say that I think Alex is amazing in this film, he’s so brave and honest and asks all the awkward questions – even to his own parents, on camera – Yes! This is one of the first scenes!
Growing up gay and confused, he wanted to understand why sex education is not taught properly, not just the “Birds and the Bees” bit, which he discusses with his parents, but why we are not taught about the emotional and wellbeing side of sex rather than just the physical side – ie: What goes where? and Which diseases you can catch?
You will definitely learn something new, as Alex asks such awkaward questions, the pones that everyone has probably wondered about, but would only brave enough to google… such as how much poop is involved in anal sex?… You get the idea….
One of my scenes, was the anatomy quiz he set up in the park, to see how many adults can correctly name the parts of the male and female genitals, it was hilarious, the male participants were overly confident that they knew the female genitalia, and after participating myself, I was humbled by how little I knew about the names of parts of the male genitals.
Apart from the honest interview with his parents, Alex embarks on interviewing some very interesting people, from Priests to Health Professionals, and Anti-Sex Ed Protestors to a manager at PornHub the leading pornography site online.
This film is fast paced and with lots of jump cuts, like a YouTube video at times, with tons of humor, although you may be embarrassed to watch this with your parents (I watched it alone), I can guarentee you will definitely laugh, with whoever you decide to view it with.
It’s not surprising that this film has won 9 festival awards, been screened in 32 film festivals on 4 continents, in 8 countries and 18 states.
It is directed by Alex Liu, it is written by Leonardo Neri and Alex Liu, produced by Steven Flynn, and edited by Brian Emerick and Alex Liu. Brian Emerick serves as Cinematographer. (81 mins, English, DocumentaryβSocial and Cultural, USA).
