Although on the surface this book may not look like my usual selection. as the main characters are more mature than myself and are at a stage in life that I have not yet entered, and therefore I thought I wouldn’t relate.
But the lovely bright, colourful book cover caught my eye and I cast my eye over the synopsis, which peaked my interest further and I realised it’s a story of relationships, and that is a subject we can all relate to.
The Synopsis
When retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be…
Meena Fisher is a middle-aged medical secretary with a husband, two grandchildren, a house to run, and more hobbies than you can shake a stick at. She is perfectly happy with her life just the way it is.
Her husband, Oscar, is a middle-aged workaholic who spends his days either in the office or on the golf course. With his wife looking after both him and the house, he gets on with the business of making money. He is also perfectly happy with his life just the way it is.
They share a house, and they sometimes eat dinner together if they can both manage to be in the same place at the same time. Aside from that, their paths rarely cross. The arrangement suits them both.
But when Oscar is forced to take early retirement and decides it’s only fair that he takes over the running of the house, both their previously happy lives are turned upside down.
The question is, can they find a way to live together with the new status quo? And, more importantly, do they want to?
The Not so golden oldies by liz davies

Liz Davies writes feel-good, light-hearted stories with a hefty dose of romance, a smattering of humour, and a great deal of love.
She’s married to her best friend, has one grown-up daughter, and when she isn’t scribbling away in the notepad she carries with her everywhere (just in case inspiration strikes), you’ll find her searching for that perfect pair of shoes. She loves to cook but isn’t very good at it, and loves to eat – she’s much better at that! Liz also enjoys walking (preferably on the flat), cycling (also on the flat), and lots of sitting around in the garden on warm, sunny days.
She currently lives with her family in Wales, but would ideally love to buy a camper van and travel the world in it.

My Thoughts
This book hooked me from the start, we meet Meena as a young girl and we gain an important insight into the way Meena is today.
This book is funny and heart-warming and a realistic depiction of a modern day couple who have been together for a long time, who are used to each others quirks and moods.
I love Meena, she’s so hard working and so selfless, but I feel that she sometimes lets Oscar, her husband take advantage of her. He seems totally dedicated to his job and his golf but no so much time spent with his family.
I do feel sorry for Meena at times, especially when her mother, who is reliant on her, (even though she says she can cope alone) seems so ungrateful for all she does for her.
This book is an easy read, fast paced and I read it quite quickly, turning the pages, hungry for more… I didn’t want it to end and I miss the characters already!
It’s been a while since a book has made me so sad for it to end, maybe Liz will revive the characters with a sequel?
I highly recommend this book, if you want a good story that is easy and fun.
